What I am most grateful for this time of year…

The Atonement

The thing I am most grateful for in my life is an understanding of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

My understanding of the Atonement grew much deeper as I went through many health struggles and surgeries this past winter.

 photo SpringFlowers-0024_zpsa5b1488d.jpg

Yes! before all of that happened, I knew that the Savior had suffered deeply and understood my pain.

However, I began to understand more fully that he also understood my sorrows, and grief as well.

He suffered and felt all of those different realms of pain.

Although my physical pain was immense from all that I went through, my emotional suffering was even greater.

 photo SpringFlowers-0032_zps0885cd01.jpg

I felt so much guilt over what I couldn’t do anymore, sorrow that I couldn’t help my kids, and sadness that my body didn’t work quite right.

When I let it go and turned it over to my Savior, it made my experience so much easier.

Turning it over wasn’t easy.  It took faithful prayer each day.

My prayers were that I could accomplish my days without guilt and sorrow. It took a lot of pleading for his help, and hand in my day. Many prayers were offered every day.

The gift of the Atonement made my struggles much lighter during that time in my life.

…and everyday beyond that experience it has helped with my struggles, guilts, and sorrows.

 photo SPringflowers-0121_zps0dcf7a7d.jpg

When I remember to call upon my Savior for help, my days seem lighter.

Our struggles are given to us to refine us.  Our struggles most often, if we allow them, can make us grow and become better.

It is never easy to struggle, but with the Savior’s help we can get through them.

Hopefully we will be changed for the better.

We all have experienced pain in our life.

But pain for all of us comes in different forms.

I recently stumbled on this quote:

 photo SPringflowers-0644_zps2d924773.jpg

“….the cavity which suffering carves into our souls will one day also be the receptacle of joy.” Neal A. Maxwell.

{this quote came from this must read talk}

I know there is a lot of suffering going on in the world.

Isn’t it nice to know that there is someone who understands our pain.

As my understanding about the Atonement has grown deeper over the months and years, my love for the Savior grows and grows.

 photo SPringflowers-0635_zps4e458322.jpg

More importantly, I understand more fully his love for me.

His love for me regardless of my shortcomings and faults.

Regardless of my poor decisions, and stupid mistakes.

…and because of his love I can’t wait to run into his arms and thank him; to rest in the comfort of his arms and love.

 photo SPringflowers-0660_zps08907c28.jpg

I have this amazing and brave friend.

Her pain has been deep over the last year.

She has suffered deeply with depression, health problem, and unemployment.  (Yes!! all at once)

I have watched her as she too has relied on the Atonement to get her through.

In fact, she was a source of strength for me during my time of pain this past winter.

She has recently started a blog about what she has been going through, what she has learned, and how she is coping.

Her story is amazing, and can help us all learn.

Her hope is that through sharing her story she can help others, but also help herself heal.

Writing has a way of healing our pain.

I want to share the link here on my blog; See Steph Go.

If you have any struggles in your life; there is something you can learn from reading her story.

 photo SPringflowers-0640_zps5b965dcf.jpg

…and don’t we all have struggles?

I am thankful she is willing to share her story.

I am thankful for a place to share goodness.

I am thankful for the gift of the Atonement, because I use it every. single. day.

I am thankful for my trials.  I understand that they refine me and help me grow.

Check out this video; all about the refiner’s fire.

Halloween Memories.

I put my Christmas stuff up today.

I am hosting Thanksgiving at my house this week, and…

I am blogging about Halloween today.

I think my Holidays are all running together.

I did however want to share a few of our Halloween memories before we move on to other things.

…and I forget all those little details that need to be recorded.

Stella keeps saying, “I can’t believe it’s almost Thanksgiving, it seems like it was just Halloween.”

I say, “that’s because it was.”

Halloween in all actuality was just 3 weeks ago.

It’s amazing how time flies.

We had a wonderful time celebrating my favorite Holiday this year.

We enjoyed an evening of carving pumpkins.

 photo Carvingpumpkins-001_zps65b7630b.jpg

The kids seemed to get frustrated because it mostly seemed like a grown-up job.

 photo Carvingpumpkins-0960_zps7a47e065.jpg

Really anytime your doing something with a sharp knife, it should be a grown-up job.

 photo Carvingpumpkins-0949_zps2659c711.jpg

I tried to remind them that it’s just about being together, and doing something different.

 photo Carvingpumpkins_zps9049f2d2.jpg

It turned out to be a fun and creative night.  The kids came up with some great designs.

 photo JexHalloweenparty-0929_zps357992e0.jpg

A few days before Halloween, I put together some Halloween goodies for a little Halloween party.

 photo JexHalloweenparty-0932_zps28a8b56c.jpg

I also enjoyed putting together a little Halloween snack bar, and preparing for a scary Halloween movie.

 photo JexHalloweenparty-0930_zps81cb09a0.jpg

Before you know it October 31st was here, and it was time to get our spook on.

As you know, I had already made the kids costumes so we could wear them to Disneyland.

We got up early and got all dressed up.

The pirate had to get up extra early.

 photo Halloween-1138_zps4a60a1f0.jpg

His bus comes at 7:03am.

Anna got up to get her hair braided.

 photo Halloween-0974_zps8638bf19.jpg

She was most excited about getting to wear lip gloss to school.

 photo Halloween-0971_zps6bed3b22.jpg

Olaf had it easy.  We didn’t even have to do his hair.

 photo Halloween-0964_zpsf26ab321.jpg

He just threw on a hat, and his fake smile.

 photo Halloween-0966_zps5add60c1.jpg

Elsa had to get out of bed early to get ready with the other kids.

 photo Halloween-0982_zpsaf3f9016.jpg

It takes quite a bit of time to get her hair braided, and…

 photo Halloween-0980_zps720e1d28.jpg

I needed a picture of all the characters from Arendelle.

 photo Halloween-0984_zps0043a692.jpg

 photo Halloween-0990_zpse5e6b90f.jpg

I had to get my costume on early in the day as well.

 photo Halloween-1046_zpsc933c28f.jpg

The kids had a small Halloween parade at school.

 photo Halloween2_zpsb204fd2e.jpg

I helped out and threw parties in Isaac and Stella’s classes.

I got a few more pictures before we went out to trick or treat…

 photo Halloween-1030_zps84616529.jpg

By the time these pictures were taken, I had taken off my cute black booties.  It was time for slippers.  It had already been a long day, and my piggies were so tired.

 photo Halloween-1058_zps61702b62.jpg

Trick or Treating in slippers was a great idea.

Here is Elsa freezing you:

 photo Halloween-1029_zps13ac5fb9.jpg

Here I am hanging out with my good friend the Mad Hatter; and telling her, “Off with your head.”

 photo Halloween-1140_zps062c0548.jpg

 photo Halloween-1093_zpsc1904078.jpg

Yes! I am obsessed with taking and having pictures.

Stella wanted to be a super hero in the evening, because her friends were all being different super heroes.

 photo Halloween-1150_zps13e29965.jpg

You can imagine how devastated I felt because I worked so hard on her Anna costume.

 photo Halloween-1152_zps23c28e11.jpg

We compromised, and I made her borrow the costume; I wasn’t spending any more $$.

So here is our Anna by day, but bat girl by night:

 photo Halloween-1154_zps63bca389.jpg

…with a really crooked mask! Ha Ha.

She enjoyed being a super hero with all her friends.

 photo Halloween-1144_zps106d667a.jpg

It turns out not all of her friends ended up being a super hero, Whatever!! Little miss tweenager was happy; so it was worth it.

Jex was also invited to a Halloween party with his tweenager friends.

The evening seemed so strange when it was time to go out.  I only had my two little ones at my side.

My kids are growing up, and starting to do their own thing. Boo Hoo!

So I went out with Isaac and Tess, and a few friends to watch my favorite part of the whole holiday.

 photo Halloween-1108_zps8d9fa5e2.jpg

There is nothing better than watching all sorts of characters roaming the streets begging for candy.

 photo Halloween-1102_zpsc5ece38c.jpg

It was a great night.

 photo Halloween-1104_zps9a4c71f3.jpg

The night ended with this beautiful sunset:

Happy Halloween, or Thanksgiving…

Oh my gosh! Really! Christmas is right around the corner.

Please don’t tell me how many more Fridays until Christmas.

I don’t want to know.

I’m not ready… as you can see I’m still hung up on Halloween.

{It’s Tradition}

I turned five a few weeks ago.

My mom threw me a princess party.

You may remember seeing it here on her blog.  We had my friend party a few days before my real birthday.

The best part about turning 5 is that I got to share my real birthday with my family.

My mom says traditions are important.

I’m not sure what that means, except I know that because of it; I get to eat my breakfast in bed every year.

 photo DSC_0864_zps33018675.jpg

This year I had a cake batter waffle.

 photo DSC_0863_zpsc7209030.jpg

A lot of people have asked my mom for the recipe.  It is super simple:

All you need is:

funfetti cake batter mix

all the ingredients that cake mix calls for

frosting

syrup and powder sugar if you like

This is how you make it:

You follow the instructions on the cake mix for ingredients and mixing.

Heat up your waffle iron and add 1/4 C. of batter to hot waffle iron.

When it’s all cooked, my mom likes to put a scoop of frosting in the middle.

She always drizzles a little syrup, sprinkles a little powdered sugar, and sticks a candle right in the middle.

Yummy Yummy. Lots of sugar in my tummy.

I opened lots of fun gifts on my birthday.  My favorite was a book that uses a special Elsa wand to add sound effects.

 photo TessisFive-0910_zps09713d88.jpg

Another fun gift was from my Aunt JoDean.  She lives close to me, so she came and read me the book Chrysanthemum.  She gave me the book to keep.  It was fun to listen to her read me the story.

   photo TessisFive-0925_zps3ba9e58e.jpg

I really like that book.

My mom says it’s tradition to have a special birthday dinner.

I get to pick what ever I want to eat.

I picked Raman Noodles.

 photo TessisFive-0899_zpsedffcfd1.jpg

My mom laughed.

I don’t know why.

She said, “that doesn’t sound like a very special birthday dinner.  Are you sure you want Raman noodles?”

 photo TessisFive-001_zps8f00c020.jpg

I was sure, and the birthday girl always gets what she wants.

I helped my mom make the cupcakes to share with my family.

 photo TessisFive-0873_zps23923ce9.jpg

I like being in the kitchen with her.

Stella helped my mom get the cupcakes all frosted.

 photo TessisFive-0911_zps886df7e6.jpg

Every year on my birthday we decorate Halloween shaped sugar cookies made by my mom.

My mom says, “it’s tradition.”

 photo TessisFive-0880_zpsbe369fe0.jpg

I love decorating the cookies.

 photo TessisFive-0888_zps7189f637.jpg

So do my brothers and sisters.

 photo TessisFive_zpsd0f1a7af.jpg

It’s fun to give the cookies away to a few of our friends; that’s tradition too.

Sometimes we take them to our school and give them to our teachers.

The day was so busy with breakfast, presents, Raman, cupcakes, and cookies.

My mom said “wow” It’s already 7:25pm:

 photo TessisFive-0898_zps20bb28ab.jpg

That is how we roll on birthdays.

Well really that is how we roll on most days.

We started decorating cookies at 7:30 at night.

My mom says when Jex was 5 he was in bed by 7:30.

I guess I’m one lucky 5 year old because I never go to bed that early.

It is so fun being the baby.

My mom says I’m spoiled.

I think I’m just well-loved.

We made a big mess in my mom’s kitchen by the time we were all done:

 photo TessisFive-0895_zpsde6e4d07.jpg

My parents gave me some face paint pens for my birthday.  Stella tried them out and turned me into a butterfly.

My family always sings “happy birthday.”

 photo TessisFive-003_zps38dab285.jpg

…and I made a wish.

I love being five.

 photo TessisFive-002_zps67c77312.jpg

I am thankful that we always do the same special things on my birthday.

I think that’s what my mom means by tradition.

see y’all later

love,

Tessa Mae
