Recent proud moments…

Even though our life has been turned upside down as of late; we have had many moments around here that I am so proud of.

Moments that are worth documenting.

1. Coming to the end of this medical school, residency, fellowship, and moving all over the world journey.

wishing, and hoping, and planning and dreaming..

My husband and I are about to celebrate our 14th wedding anniversary.

Last year in May, we celebrated by going back to the island we lived on for 2 years.  The island of Saba.

I guess because it is that time of year, I just keep wishing we were going back there again.

I was hoping there was plans to go; but unfortunately that can only be a dream this year.

We bought a house instead.

I do go to sleep each night dreaming about our awesome vacation.

I realized that last year, I never even blogged about our trip.  Once we got home from Saba, we moved 6 days later.  Needless to say life was a little turned upside down.

In honor of all those memories that fill my dreams and celebrating 14 years of marriage I am dedicating this week to that beautiful island.

I plan to share several posts this week all about our vacation, our life there, and lessons learned.

I realized that I don’t share much about that part of our life here, and it was such a monumental part of our life and should be recorded.

Here are some of the highlights from our trip last May; mixed in with WAY to many pictures.

It was 6 years previous that we left the island and moved back to the US.  I couldn’t wait to get back to island life.

 photo Saba-0532_zps4c7b33f6.jpg

I got butterflies in my stomach again as we boarded the 19 seater airplane and flew over the ocean.  I felt the warmth of home flood my soul as the tires came to a screeching stop on the shortest commercial runway in the world.  We were home!! A week long vacation at home.

 photo Saba-0122_zpsd783b9d7.jpg

We both enjoyed hiking.  Saba is known for it’s hiking trails. I think you can tell from the photos how beautiful the hikes are. When we lived there we didn't have much time to hike.  We had two little people with us, and Jonathan did lots of studying.  It was nice to hike some of the trails we had never seen.

 photo Saba-0007_zpsfdd59132.jpg

We enjoyed our favorite refreshing beverage again, and even brought a case of it home in a suitcase.

  photo Saba-0005_zps9eca72b7.jpg

Ting is a delicious grapefruit drink found in the Caribbean. I recently found one lone Ting hanging out on the shelf at Walmart.  So strange; but so wonderful.

 photo Saba-0518_zpse98abee0.jpg

Along with Ting, we also enjoyed eating at some of our favorite restaurants.  This delicious meal comes from the Rainforest CafĂ©. It requires a short hike to arrive and all the produce comes straight out of their garden.  YUM!

  photo Saba-0446_zpsdc3680f4.jpg

Jonathan’s favorite burger in the world.

  photo Saba-0449_zpsa5ecedba.jpg

We have to come back to Saba just to get it.

 photo Saba-0369_zps1911a94a.jpg

We enjoyed sticking our feet in the sand.

 photo Saba-0359_zps5e493dad.jpg

Saba has only one beach and it is wandering.  Wandering means it comes and goes with the tide.  It was not there when we were on vacation.

However, we did find a little spot of sand when we hiked down to the water.

 photo Saba-0268_zps8e6dac5f.jpg

It was so nice to feel the spray of the ocean again.

 photo Saba-0485_zps0982e71b.jpg

We enjoyed getting reacquainted with the bug life on Saba; tree frogs, slugs, and lizards.

 photo Saba-0178_zpsf5828ba2.jpg

More then anything it was the beauty of the island that just mesmerizes you.

 photo Saba-0080_zps7739a3ec.jpg

I couldn’t help but walk around and snap some pictures of it’s beauty.

 photo Saba-0170_zpsddcc5644.jpg

Every home on Saba looks similar.

   photo Windows_zpsab6f05e6.jpg

They each are painted white, with green or red shutters and a red roof.  It adds to the charm.

 photo Saba-0470_zps4e54baf6.jpg

We also enjoyed quietly reading in such a peaceful place. Saba is so peaceful, it was nice to get away from the hub-bub of life.

  photo Saba-0420_zpsc1f5de7a.jpg

More then anything, I enjoyed hanging out with Jonathan.  Taking this trip was a good reminder of our commitment to each other.

It was such a beautiful trip full of reminders of how far we have come, and how we have done it together.

I edited this pictures as a symbol of that.  This is Jonathan on our trip sporting his shades.

 photo Saba-00122_zpsabfeed03.jpg

This is the edited version.

 photo Saba-0012_zps4f1f52c9.jpg

I added the pictures in the lens’s. The picture on the left lens is just a few days before he started medical school on Saba.  The picture on the right lens is of him on our trip back at the end of his residency.  He had come a long way in those eight years, and now it is nine.  The sunglasses symbolize looking to the future.

I love you Jonathan.  Wish we were on Saba right now drinking a cold cold Ting.

I recently framed some of these photos for our house.  I made this one to remind me of this journey we have taken together.

Stay tuned to hear more about that journey in the coming days.

Our Dad.

I am so thankful the Daddy in our home, can do some of the things I can’t do.

For example: Jex comes home from scouts with a piece of wood and four wheels, and he is supposed to turn it into a car.

I just say, “ask your dad.”

…and the beauty is that I know that he can accomplish this task and is willing.

We have a great Dad around here.

 photo PinewoodDerbyCollage_zpsa6d7df4f.jpg

Last week, we participated in Jex’s Cub Scout Pinewood Derby.

We had a great time.

  photo PinewoodDerby2013-0048_zps5087a32b.jpg

Jonathan and Jex did such an amazing job with his car.  Jonathan is so good at this kind of stuff.  The boys spent hours cutting, sanding and painting.

  photo jexcollage_zps8de0aa8a.jpg

Jonathan even helped another boy from Jex’s troop; so he actually made 2.

After the official race, any one who wanted to enter a car could; Stella entered Jex’s old car.

 photo Stellacollage_zps9bba6d2e.jpg

It was fun to watch the two cars face off.

 photo racecollage_zpsf8a21a20.jpg

What a fun night.

I am off to spend some time with the kids, and enjoy our one day Spring Break tomorrow. Wahoo!!(impressive PA)

Oh, and to think about how grateful I am for Dad’s and their role in families.

Another little message about Dads.

Spring… and faith and exciting NEWS.

I am beginning to wonder if spring is really going to happen or not.

Raise your hand if this has felt like the longest winter?

Each winter; I am reminded of faith.  We all have faith that spring is coming; because it always has.

God never lets us down.

Even here in PA,  it snows, and yet there is still evidence that spring is around the corner.

 photo SpringFlowers-0032_zps0885cd01.jpg

Our family recently has had some very faith promoting experiences of our own.

Jonathan is wrapping up his fellowship here in PA.

That means it is time to pick a job, and finally settle in.

Who knew that would be the scariest part of this whole journey.

Who knew that moving to the Caribbean nine years ago with 3 suitcases would seem easier than choosing a job and location to settle in and raise our family?

Over the last several months, we have put a lot of faith in God while we made choices about a job and a location to settle in to.

My amazing, handsome, hunk of a doctor husband had several awesome jobs to choose from.

IMG_0707

(this is Jonathan’s photo that is on his card at work. I just think he looks so handsome and professional)

Each job offer had something wonderful; yet each one lacking something.

Some had location, others had salary, and others had awesome opportunities.

None had all three.

It has been hard to make a decision.

They were all good choices, and sometimes it is hard to decide between things that are gray and gray.  When I say gray I don’t mean dull.  I just mean it hasn’t been black and white.

If it was black and white, it would be much easier.

In nine years, our path has been very much guided by God.  He has had a hand in every place we have moved. (read more about that here.)

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that we would be guided once again.

That is where the faith had to come in.

 photo SpringFlowers-0001_zps9263d9c2.jpg

The faith that God knew where we would bloom.

As with most decisions in our home, we rely on prayer.

We took this particular decision to God; and he answered.

I have found that sometimes in my life there are answers that God answers with a simple, “it mattereth not to me.”  Sometimes what God is saying is, “either choice is fine.”

In this particular decision, God had a specific answer.

This answer was not the answer that our family expected.

At times, we didn’t know if it was the answer that we wanted.

From other angles, it was exactly what we wanted.

For days and weeks, we went back to the Lord, saying are you sure?

Each time he answered and I am sure it was in a very tired voice that he responded, “Yes. I am sure.”

God has been patient.

Let me also tell you, I married an amazing man.

My faithful husband listened to God, and followed his answer.

Jonathan is giving up a lot.  The other jobs had things to offer that the job we chose does not.

After 9 years of devoting your life to something; you are looking for the right job.

The job that offers everything you want.

He found that job, but it wasn’t the job he was guided to take.

Jonathan was very excited about that job; and has mourned the loss of it greatly.

It is hard to turn down something that you want.

Then he picks his head up, and he goes forward with faith; knowing that God has something awesome planned for him and our family.

 photo FamilyPics201210.jpg

Jonathan has always taken care of his family first, and this time has been no different.

I am so lucky to be married to a man that has enough faith to walk away from something he wants for something God wants for our family instead.

He loves us enough to take the job in the city that he knows is best for our family; not necessarily the job he thought he would end up with.

We both know that God has a plan for us.

I know that God has a great work for my husband to do, and that he has been called to heal people.

I also know that Jonathan won’t let God down.

I am thankful that I know and understand that faith is hard.

 photo SpringFlowers-0024_zpsa5b1488d.jpg

Having faith is like a long hard winter, but then the spring blossoms bloom.

Just like our family and my husband will in….

Logan, Utah.

I love you J.

Top Ten in January

Periodically, I like to list my top ten.

My Top Ten are things that I might be working on right now, things that I love at the moment, or times with my family that I have cherished.

Top Ten in January:

1. I love the new challenges that come along with January.  I love setting goals and working towards them.

2. I am having a love/hate relationship with our workout program for the next 60 days or so.  Jonathan and I are doing Insanity.  Let me tell you, I feel a little insane when I can barely walk because this program tears you up.

3. I am in love winter clothes; specifically boots and skinny jeans.  My husband thinks I have too many boots. (six or seven pair is not too many right?) I love pairing brown boots with black clothes.  I know that was a no-no when “we"(us thirty-something’s) were in high school.  Oh well, girls of the eighties and nineties; I am doing it now. And I love it.

my headshots-48

I feel so funny posting a picture of myself.  Headshots taken by Krysta Moes Photography.

4. I enjoy having long hair. My hair has never been this long.  I have so many options with it.  Jonathan loves it, however he hates finding hair all over the house.

5. My favorite phrase right now is, “nuggle mom?”  That means: snuggle mom?  It is the sweetest thing a two year old can say.  She says it a lot.  I am grateful for that because she is the baby, and I am not ready to give up the snuggling.

Ellie Harper Bailey-11

6.  I enjoyed talking pictures of this sweet little newborn; Ellie Harper.  I did re-think having another child, but only for a split second.  OK.  Let’s be honest; I thought about it for a day.  Four is a good number, and I am happy with that.(because my baby still “nuggles” with me.)

7.  I am enjoying reading The Boxcar Children to the kids at night.  I have also enjoyed a little reading on my own.  Books are such a nice vacation from life.

8.  One of my favorite things is how helpful my husband is.  Our new saying for the year is, “if we are busy, let’s be busy together.”  With a family of six you are bound to be busy. When I am busy in the kitchen, he has been right there with me.  I like being busy with him; I like staring at him while we work.

9.  I have enjoyed looking for new recipes on pinterest and then making them healthy; between 350-400 calories. Stay tuned for a couple of those.

10.  I love our family tradition of “two thumbs up.” We have been doing it for about a year now.  At bedtime, we give two thumbs up to a child who has done something extraordinary that day.  It is a way to reinforce good behavior.  Our kids love it, and won’t let us forget.  Prayer time is the perfect time for this.  I love the smiles on their face as they give or receive the two thumbs up.

….and that’s my top ten.

I’ll go where you want me to go…

There is a beautiful song in our church hymn book that says:

“I’ll go where you want me to go dear Lord, over mountain or plain or sea.  I’ll go where you want me to go dear Lord.  I’ll be what you want me to be.”

That has certainly been the song Jonathan and I have been singing over the last 8 years of our life.  Every move or journey that we have taken has not been without the Lord’s hand.  This next journey has not been any different.

We have traveled to the Caribbean, then back to Utah, to Kansas, and then on to Arkansas.  Most of the time our place of residence was not by our choice.  It has always happened how Heavenly Father wanted it to happen.  Every time, it has been what is best for our family.  One destination in particular ended up being one of our biggest family trials, but we had to go through that trial to end up where we were supposed to be.

The next phase of life brings a bright light to the end of our tunnel.  You see we are nearing the end of Jonathan’s residency.  Residency is the training a doctor receives once he completes medical school. Yes, did you know that while in residency you are a doctor?   Residency is where you train to be the kind of doctor you would like to be.  Jonathan has been doing his residency in Physiatry.   Another term for that is Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.  That’s a fancy term for a rehab doctor.  Jonathan helps people recover from injury, strokes, or certain disabilities that may affect muscles and nerves.   After you complete your residency, it is time to start your own practice or find a job.  Residency’s very in length depending on the type.  Jonathan is a fourth year resident in a four year program.   However, instead of starting his own practice or signing on with a clinic, Jonathan has decided to specialize in his field of Physiatry.   There are specialties in every kind of medicine.  When you specialize, you do what is called a fellowship.

Jonathan has known all along that a fellowship was the right path for him.  He wanted to be able to learn more then he was taught in his four years of residency.  I know four years is a long time, and you might think that he should be able to have learned everything.  I am hear to tell you that doctors cram so much in to their brain.  It is amazing all the knowledge he has floating around in his brain.  I don’t know how he keeps it all straight, but there is still more to learn.  He will always have more to learn.  He wanted to do his fellowship in Interventional Spine and Sports Medicine.  During a fellowship, you have the opportunity to work with doctors in your field.  You work in their practice as a doctor, and receive special training from them in the specialty you are seeking.

Fellowships are hard to come by.  It takes a lot of work to secure them.  Jonathan has worked very hard the last 8 years, and deserved everything he wanted.  You see I don’t think he deserves it only because he is good at what he does.  He deserves it because no matter what he faced in his medical career; he put his family first.  I am hear to tell you that because he put his family first, Heavenly Father was willing to bless him with his desires.

And so the story of how Jonathan has been blessed with the fellowship he so desired:

Jonathan started applying to fellowships.  As he did this, he only applied to programs West of Arkansas.  We were ready to be a little closer to home.  Soon after he applied, we received word from a practice in Utah, and 3 in Phoenix.  Great!! All a little closer to home.  I was ecstatic;  so was our family.

He interviewed with the group in Utah and immediately knew it wasn’t the practice for us.    We started looking forward to his time in Phoenix, I started preparing for our move closer to family, a temple, and a greater concentration of LDS church members.  When I say this, I mean literally,  I envisioned us in Phoenix.  Picking places to live.  Telling my family it was a very short drive.  Finding the best school districts.

I even made a deal with Heavenly Father.  “Heavenly Father”, I said, “I promise to go to the temple once a month, if you can help us secure a job in Phoenix.”  The temple is a very special place for LDS church members.  We long to go there.  Many of us have to drive hours to the nearest temple.  If I lived in Phoenix, it would be a very short drive to the nearest temple.

Before his first interview in Phoenix, he was reviewing the list of fellowships and one stuck out to him in bold letters. One he had not applied to.   He called this program, and asked if he could send them a resume.  They politely told him that they had filled all their interview spots.  Before hanging up, Jonathan then asked if he could mail it anyway.  The lady replied,  “sure, sometimes we have a cancellation and are able to fit you in.”  Jonathan then sent his resume to a state that is not West of Arkansas.  I don’t think he even told me.

Several weeks later, after returning home from his first Phoenix interview, he is so excited.  He loved the owners of the practice, and enjoyed being in Phoenix.  I was so elated.  They were to make their decision on September 15th.

Two more Phoenix interviews to go, and then; he got an email from that practice EAST of Arkansas.  They loved his resume, and had made room for him.  They set the dates for the 19th and 20th.  PERFECT!! We will have heard from the Phoenix fellowship before he even has to go to the Eastern Interview.  Then on Monday the 12th, Jonathan has the feeling to call the East and ask if everything is still in order for his interviews on the 19th and 20th.  The woman replies, “excuse me?’  She then gets this sorrowful sound in her voice as she realizes she has given Jonathan the wrong dates.  They too are making their decision on September 15th.  She needed him to come on the 13th and 14th.  That is tomorrow.

To make a long story short, they agreed to interview him on the 14th and 15th(decision day), because of their mistake.  Jonathan flew out the next day.  He had an amazing interview on the 14th, and when he called me that evening, I knew.  I knew that we were not moving to the warm weather.  I could hear it in his voice.  He knew also.  He had not yet been offered the job, but he knew in his heart that he would be.

I went to bed that night, telling God that I would go where he wanted me to go.  Even though I had promised to go to the temple once a month, he reassured me that this would be even better for our family.  I also felt these words enter my mind, “all your losses with be compensated.”  That meant to me, the blessings of the temple, the church members in numerous amount, the warm weather, and being so close to family, will be compensated for by some other wonderful blessing.

“I will go where you want me to go”, were the last words uttered in my prayer.

The next morning, after just one hour of being at the practice, Jonathan was offered the job.  Then just minutes later, received an email that he did not receive the position in Phoenix.  The practice in the East has so much more to offer Jonathan, and for that we are grateful.  It is an accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship which is such a prestigious award for a practice to have.  The practice itself is amazing, with so many wonderful features.  It has so much to offer Jonathan,  including time spent as the team physician for the minor league baseball team.  Which is a dream in itself.   None of the Phoenix fellowships could offer that to him.  It is also a very hard fellowship to come by.  This practice interviewed close to 50 applicants, and reviewed over 70 applications.  They offered it to 3 people.  See how Heavenly Father can make all your dreams come true?

I am so thankful that Jonathan saw it there in BOLD.  I am thankful that regardless of what we think is best, Heavenly Father always knows better.  I am grateful that he took the time to nudge our family in the right direction with subtle and sometimes not so subtle promptings.  I am also thankful that Heavenly Father rewarded Jonathan for all he has done right, by blessing him with something he felt he deserved.  This is one of those moments that we really felt God’s love.

…and I think I have kept you waiting long enough.  The practice that is East of Arkansas is located in:

York, Pennsylvania.  Start date: July 2012

Ice Cream Party Details…

Saturday was a big day for our family.

We celebrated a birthday.

We like to make birthdays a big deal around our house.

It is tradition to spend as much quality time with each other, and make the birthday person feel so special.

We tried to do just that for Jonathan.

We had an ICECREAM PARTY.

Icecream Party CR

Jonathan loves ice cream.

This is what we did:

The kids made cupcakes in ice cream cones.  The older two did this all on there own.

OvenCR

We used a muffin tin to hold them up.

Only fill the cone up to the line or they will over flow.

Any old cake mix will do, and it will make 24.

Follow the cake instructions for temp and time.

Once they were done we frosted them to look like this:

cupcakesCR

We also made this nifty cake stand out of the cheap plastic wear from Wal-Mart.(it was on clearance)  We used some cheap glass plates to glue to the plastic cups we got at Wal-Mart.

Isaac cones

Next, Isaac was in charge of the cones.

We melted some chocolate chips.

He rolled the top in the melted chocolate….

It's a party

….then in some sprinkles.

We set them on wax paper to dry.

This is the result:

ConesCR

Next we prepared the toppings,  they were our favorite part.

We had a hard time not sneaking a taste while we chopped.

Using my Pampered Chef food chopper, we chopped up Twix and 3 Musketeers mint candy bars.

Some mini M&M’s, hot fudge and caramel rounded out our toppings.

When it was time, we laid out the spread.

Table CR copy

Don’t forget to buy good ice cream.

We like Homemade Vanilla by Blue Bell.

Hey when you don’t have time to make it homemade this will do it is just as good.

Break out some fun dishes to serve in, and neat bowls to hold your toppings.  I used my milk glass for the toppings.

Dishes really will make it feel more special.

EnjoyCR

We all dished up, and devoured.

I think this was the best ice cream sundae ever.

The kids thought the cake in the cone was so neat.

It really added to the theme of our party, and it was something that they could make themselves.

Take the time to make the birthdays in your home special.  Include everyone to MAKE something spectacular for the ones you love.

Remember that special doesn’t always mean a lot of money.

P.S.  Take the time to visit Project 365.  I finally updated after over a week.  Click on the photo to take you there.

i love photography
